Reigns Undergows Emergency Surgery.

Rising WWE star Roman Reigns has been pulled from the Night of Champions PPV on Sunday to undergo "emergency surgery."

WWE made the announcement Saturday morning via text blast, noting Reigns has already undergone the surgery and will not be facing Seth Rollins on the PPV.

According to WWE, Reigns's surgery was to repair an "incarcerated hernia," which can be a serious situation where blood flow is restricted in the lower abdominal region.

WWE did not offer a recovery time. WWE says it will be decided by a local surgeon in Nashville who performed the surgery and WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann. Reigns was already in Nashville for Night of Champions when the situation occurred.

This could be a blessing or a curse for Reigns. Either way, hope he makes a full recovery.

Really tough break for both WWE and Reigns. With the top of the card already really thin this is a big blow. But like you said, could also be blessing in disguise, some other guys might get an opportunity they wouldn't normally get.

Sucks for Reigns because he was the #2 (and only other) main event babyface.

Could mean big things for Rollins and Ambrose though so could be good.

At 2:31 PM Eastern, WWE ran a "Breaking News" update with Scott Stanford at WWE Headquarters on the WWE Network, cutting into "Slam City."

Stanford announced that Roman Reigns' surgery was a success and that Reigns is in recovery. Reigns will remain overnight in the hospital in Nashville, TN but has been pulled from the WWE Night of Champions PPV.

Christopher Amann was on the phone. He said that "fortunately, everything seems to be doing fine." He said Reigns was resting comfortably.

Stanford asked what brought on the hernia. Dr. Amann said that it wasn't something that happened in the ring but something that Reigns had been dealing with. This morning in his hotel, Reigns woke with bad abdominal pain that was getting worse, so reached out to the WWE medical staff.

Reigns was told to go to the hospital and learned it was an incarcerated hernia, which means a loop of intestine had wrapped around it. Obviously, that required immediate emergency surgery.

Reigns will be out of the ring at least 4-6 weeks but possibly as long as three months. He said that Reign's physical fitness won't help him in recovering from a hernia operation. Amann said the big thing is letting the tissue and muscle heal before he's allowed to do anything physical. He said they won't let him return until he's completely cleared.

Terrible news for Reigns, regarding both his health and career. It's also very bad for WWE, as their roster is in dire need of popular faces at the top of the card.

In the long run, this might work out for him and WWE. I mean you never want to get injured, but thankfully for Reigns, it came at a time while he was still in the developing stage of his main event push, rather than at the peak of it. Plus, this will allow Reigns to have the time necessary to get ready for that eventual main event position.

I am real sour on Reigns right now and most of it isn't his fault. It is the bland/safe booking and the ultra predictable direction they are taking him. That all said, I think this is going to ultimately be really good for him. I really felt like the audience was starting to get restless with this guy and he doesn't seem to "get" the intricacies of wrestling well enough to stave that off or feed off of it. Some time away will give fans a break, make us forget that the WWE seemed to not really have any good ideas for him, give him time to think, give the audience time to miss him, and give some freshness to his position on the roster.

Of course it sucks he got hurt, but I really think his hype train was going to get derailed well before Mania. Now he has a chance to stay on track if they REALLY want that.
