Re: 2014 World Cup
Oh the US is so, so screwed in that group. I'll still cheer for them, but they are so screwed. Excited for Spain/Netherlands today. Those are the kind of games that made me a soccer fan after the last World Cup.

I covered soccer in college and it made me like the sport. But I can really only watch the last half of games that aren't the US.

The u.s. team is not good, and there with Germany, protugal,And brazil.
They have only 2 really good players, a goalie and forward.
If you want to watch soccer, watch every other team in there group.

I have considerable malice in my heart for Robin Van Persie after he left Arsenal to join Manchester United, but that goal was fucking great. Well done RVP.

It's not that the US team isn't good, it's just that the talent is far greater for Germany and Portugal. And Ghana always seems to beat the US at the World Cup. They'd have a shot to advance in most any other group.

They got fucking clowned. Apparently you get complacent after you've only lost one meaningful game in the past 6 years. Never would have dreamed they'd get decimated like that, even against a quality side like the Dutch.

Re: 2014 World Cup
Spain got got.
USA are a very talented team as a whole, got put in a terrifying group. If they beat POR we should be ok.
I still like either KNVB or Germany to win the whole thing
Although we haven't seen Balotelli and Italy yet.

Daniel Sturridge's goal celebration looks dangerously close to Emma's entrance dance
Also, Andrea Pirlo = Italian Chuck Norris

Re: 2014 World Cup
Pirlo really is the Italian Chuck Norris. He is such an incredible player, so smart, so much vision on the field.
The Dutch team looked like world beaters against Spain. Granted they were picking off those counter attacks after it became 2-1, but still. Robbin just about had a hat trick and RVP's flying header will be hard to beat for goal of the cup. I picked Argentina to win it all, but Netherlands may be the team to beat if they play like that.
Costa Rica had a fantastic upset win today too.
Italy looks a little better than I thought right now. They have a lot of young players, but their counterattack movement has been fantastic. They change pace really well and have caught England standing upright a few times. That is all, of course, on top of the fact that they don't have their all time great keeper, Buffon.
The U.S. is in a world of trouble, no doubt. If they can manage a win over Ghana (who has given them trouble before), they aren't in terrible shape. Germany will likely run over us, but Portugal is a beatable good team, especially if the US can turn it into a scrap. The U.S. team has had a lot of success against big teams by doing just that. The chances of us getting out of the group stage are slim and none, but I actually prefer that draw to group B.

Holy shit brooksy with a hell of a goal. No altidore but I thin AJ can settle down.
We need to beat Portugal. That's all there is to it.

Re: 2014 World Cup
The U.S. has got some life. They can actually go through with a win over Portugal tomorrow. Obviously, that is easier said than done, but Ronaldo is hurt, Pepe is out, and Portugal has suffered numerous other injuries that make them very very beatable.
This has been an absolutely crazy world cup to this point, extremely entertaining to watch.
My pick at the beginning of the tournament was Argentina and they haven't looked great to this point, but Messi keeps bailing them out. His injury time goal today was absolutely amazing. It was a perfect shot that only a world class player could put away.

Re: 2014 World Cup
Yea this world cup has been pretty great. Even the 1 0-0 game i sat through (Japan vs. Greece) was pretty entertaining. Greece was down a man like the whole 2nd half and had to keep fighting off japan's attack.

Re: 2014 World Cup
US really needs to beat Portugal, cause the last thing they want is going into the Germany game and needing a result. I don't foresee it going well for them. Take care of business tomorrow and get the job done.
I too picked Argentina to win, and I'll stick with them despite the shaky performances. France has looked very strong though, they could make a run.

...That Belgium/Russia game was HORRIBLE. Belgium hasn't really been living up to the hype. The S-Korea/Algeria on the other hand was pretty entertaining for the first 30 minutes that I watched.
Reeeeeeeally hoping Australia can overcome the odds and send Spain home with 0 points.

So I go to work today and Luis Suarez decides to bite someone...AGAIN! Knew I should have taken all my vacation for the World Cup.

Re: 2014 World Cup
Man that U.S. game was heartbreaking. They outplayed portugal for 75 minutes and the first goal was all self inflicted. The problem is not just that they have to face a German team with something on the line, but they are coming away from the filed that is in the middle of the Amazon. No team has one their next game after playing there. It may be coincidence, but I would guess that at least PART of it has to do with heat and tough travel.
If Suarez isn't banned for the rest of this world cup I will be really disappointed. He is a lot of fun to watch, but I have no time for that. He should have been sent off the field at once and that game should have probably ended in a draw. Remember, not only did he not get carded, Italy was given a penalty on that play, which kept play down at that end, eventually leading to Suarez bending a corner in for the header/goal. Mexico has been the victim of a number of bad calls, but this has got to be the most disappointing (non)call of the tournament so far.
Also, is there any player in the world more frustrating than Balotelli? There are players more disgusting (suarez), but this guy has all the physical talent in the world, but his game seems entirely based on his mood.
