Netflix has greenlit “G.L.O.W.,” a comedy series based on the 1980’s female wrestling league, which will be exec produced by Jenji Kohan, Variety has learned.

Founded in the mid-’80s, G.L.O.W. — which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling — was a popular professional wrestling troupe on a self-titled show that ran until 1990, and also toured for live shows.

Inspired by the real story behind the wrestlers, the half-hour series will be the fictionalized story of an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers. “G.L.O.W.” will be set in Los Angeles and is described as showcasing “big hair and body slams.”

In 2011, a critically-praised and award-winning documentary on the group, titled “GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” was released. The upcoming comedy series is an extension of the “G.L.O.W.” brand for Netflix, as the documentary became available on the streaming giant.

The project marks a continuation in business with Kohan, who created “Orange is the New Black.” She will serve as an exec producer with “OITNB’s” Tara Herrmann and “G.L.O.W.” co-creators Liz Flahive (“Homeland”) and Carly Mensch (“Nurse Jackie”). Flahive and Mensch — who was a writer/producer on “Weeds,” which Kohan also created — will serve as showrunners.

Kohan recently landed a monster renewal for “OITNB” with three seasons picked up. Kohan is on board the serve as showrunner through the seventh season.

Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of “G.L.O.W.” No premiere date, production date or casting has been set.

Flahive and Mensch are repped by WME as well as Schreck Rose and Shuman Co., respectively.

Not going to lie, I'm going to watch this.

It's definitely a very interesting development. Netflix originals are huge right now, because of the amount of younger people who are forgoing cable and use streaming services like Netflix as their source of entertainment.

What's also notable is how Netflix has chosen to produce a scripted series about wrestling as one of their original shows, rather than pick up programming from a wrestling promotion.

Lucha Underground and Global Force Wrestling were practically begging to be on Netflix, and in the case of LU, they claimed that they received a "lowball" offer. I doubt that this will lead to any significant on the wrestling front on Netflix, but it's still cool to see something like this getting made.

Orange is the New Black is amazing and with Netflix also behind this, it's pretty much guaranteed to be good.
