I don't have an opinion about Rousey one way or the other really, but I kind of feel bad for her. There was never really a "good" time for her to loose, but this is horrible timing for her first loss.

Did Rhonda even go for one takedown?
That juke before the knockout was so baffling.

She had 1 attempt at a throw in the first, it kinda worked.

As far as for UFC's purposes this was actually a great time for her first loss IMO.
The Cyborg fight just wasn't ever a real option and she was out of opponents, and do to outside commitments I don't think she was going to fight again until July anyway.
Now you made a new star in Holm, and assuming she doesn't lose to someone like Tate(I would have to think she fights in February/March) come July you have a huge grudge fight with the biggest star in the sport and the only person to beat her.
UFC 200 Rousey v Holm 2 will be the biggest UFC PPV buyrate, they will set records, and either Ronda redeems herself and you have everyone take a fresh shot at her or Holm proves she's the best and you have tons of fresh challengers for her

The thing about this fight is that Ronda didn't make one particular mistake or simply have a bad gameplan (like many people want to point to), Holm is just a terrible matchup for her.
Holm uses distance incredibly well, so Ronda couldn't just rush at her for takedowns in the clinch like with previous opponents. That also means Holm wouldn't foolishly go after Ronda herself like Cat Zingano did. Rousey is really only skilled at taking opponents down through the clinch or in close range with headlock takeovers or hip tosses, due to her Judo base. She isn't experienced with shooting in for single or double-leg takedowns because she has no Wrestling background.
Another thing is that fights like Ronda vs. Bethe Correia are terrible for a fighter's psyche. Ronda managed to KO a lousy fighter rather quickly, and it helped create a false sense of just how good of a striker she really is. Never mind that if you rewatch the fight, you can actually see Bethe land about 3 punches straight to Ronda's face.
That's even worse when she has such a delusional trainer like Edmund Tarverdyan overstating her boxing skills and Ring Magazine foolishly putting her on the cover of their latest issue with the horrendous headline, "She Conquered MMA. Is Boxing Next?".
As for what's next, I think Holm should get a fight in the next few months and it should be against Meisha Tate (who she can realistically beat). A win against the #2 fighter in the weight class (both in terms of rankings and popularity) only helps increase Holm's popularity and makes a rematch with Ronda at UFC 200 that much bigger.
Shelving her until next July only hurts the momentum she gained off of this win. And in the worst case scenario that she loses, the UFC instead ends up with Rousey vs. Tate 3, which in hindsight, the UFC probably wishes they would have actually booked instead like originally planned.
